Who We Are

The South/ South West Hospital Group (S/SWHG) is one of seven hospital groups in the Republic of Ireland. It has responsibility for the provision of acute hospital care for a population of over 915,000 people (19% of the population of the State) across Cork, Kerry, Waterford and South Tipperary, and a supra-regional catchment of 1.2 million which includes Carlow, Kilkenny and Wexford.

The S/SWHG employs 11,800 highly skilled and caring staff and aims to deliver excellent clinical outcomes and a great experience for all our patients and their families.

The S/SWHG consists of eight statutory hospitals and two voluntary hospitals. The statutory hospitals are:

  • Bantry General Hospital (BGH)
  • Cork University Hospital (CUH)
  • Cork University Maternity Hospital (CUMH)
  • Kilcreene Orthopedic Hospital (KOH)
  • Mallow General Hospital (MGH)
  • South Tipperary General Hospital (STGH)
  • University Hospital Kerry (UHK)
  • University Hospital Waterford (UHW)

The two voluntary hospitals in the Group are funded by the HSE as Section 38 agencies under the Health Act 2004:

  • Mercy University Hospital (MUH)
  • South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital (SIVUH)

These hospitals are defined as Models 2 to 4 based on the health services that are provided. There are two Model 4 hospitals (both of which are Cancer Centres), three Model 3 hospitals, two Model 2 hospitals, two exclusively elective hospitals and a Maternity Hospital. Emergency services are provided at six of the ten sites in accordance with the Acute Medicine Programme and Emergency Medicine Programme requirements.

The primary academic partner for the Group is University College Cork (UCC) and, together with our Higher Education Institutes of Technology in Cork and Waterford, plays an important role in developing and improving academic teaching, research and innovation to drive improved health for the population in the S/SWHG.
